Wine Wednesday!

Our new house wine!

wine wednesday

red blend-- Cabernet/Merlot

This is my new favorite wine.  We tried it a few weeks ago and I’m in love!  This is an Australian wine, Taltarni 3 Monks.  It’s a Cabernet/Merlot blend.  If I remember correctly, this one is slightly over $20, but worth every penny.  It’s been consistently rated 90 points or higher by several wine rating systems.   In my, oh so humble, opinion, this wine is bold enough to enjoy with most red meats, but soft enough to also accompany white meats and vegetarian entrees.

My tasting notes:

  • deep burgandy color, tints between red and purple
  • very smooth, not too acidic
  • floral/berry bouquet
  • hint of vanilla, berry flavors, almost a strawberry undertone

And for the real notes?

Winemaker Comments

“This wine is a deep ruby colour, with fresh purple tints. It displays classic black fruit and forest floor varietal characters complemented by soft, mocha oak flavours. The long, fruit driven palate and firm, ripe tannins make this an ideal wine for drinking now or for aging for two to three years.”

“Three Monks 2005 characterizes Taltarni’s distinctive style of opulent flavors, structure and cellaring ability. Color: Deep black cherry Nose: An alluring assortment of uplifted black cherries, dark berry fruits, scorched almonds, coffee, tobacco leaves and licorice allsorts. Palate: read more…A well-structured wine with layers of plump plum and blackberry fruits combined with a mix of savory spices, subtle herbs and firm, dusty tannins. Serving Suggestions: The explosion of rich fruit flavors in Taltarni’s Three Monks 2005 makes it ideal for immediate enjoyment, although it also offers the complexity and structure to age gracefully. A perfect accompaniment to a veal ragout. “
